moulded pottery oil lamp decorated with a foliate tondo within a raised dot border. Some minor chips and surface erosion as would be expected of an item of this age. Old collection number attached to the top of the oil lamp. Ex. Collection: Sir Francis Sacheverel-Darwin, Breadsall Priory, Derbyshire, 1786-1859. Probably acquired during his Grand Tour of the Mediterranean, c. 1808 -1811. Sir Francis was the godfather and uncle of Sir Francis Galton, and the half-uncle of Charles Darwin who frequently visited his zoological and antiquities collections during his childhood which no doubt sparked an interest in the young Charles Darwin of the wonders of the natural world. This item was acquired from the Darwin family around 2006 and represents a rare opportunity to purchase an object from this highly regarded provenance linked to one of the most influential scientists of the 19th Century. Size: 94mm x 44mm. Very fine condition.
